'Cornish Mizzle over Pendennis Castle' is an original oil painting on linen board which I painted in response to a blustery, rain-filled day, where I finally escaped to the car and sat above Castle Beach in Falmouth with my flask of coffee and sketch book! The work captures the distinctive Cornish “mizzle” — fine drizzle driven by wind — as fast-moving clouds swept across Pendennis Castle.
I tried to capture the castle and surrounding headland appearing and disappearing through layers of rain and shifting light, to create a sense of movement and transience. Working in oil allows for expressive, layered brushwork and I hope that the piece reflects the sense of being immersed in the elements — the sound of wind, the sensation of rain, and the dramatic presence of Pendennis Castle emerging through cloud and drizzle.
It is varnished in a satin varnish which gives a high sheen but allows the painting to shift and change itself in varying light. It's a little painting but it manages to have an evocative presence!
It's framed in a white, wooden floating frame.
